Mementorium is a heartfelt story about identity and belonging told through a branching narrative in virtual reality. Uncover memories of gender and sexuality bias inside “mementos” that transport you to a dreamlike environment. Choose your story through playful interactions to transform your “mementorium” into a place of strength and belonging. Shape your story and discover, “who can we become when we belong?

Developed in Unreal Engine 4

Developing UI for Mementorium

For Mementorium, I used Unreal Engine’s UMG UI Designer to create a dyslexia and color vision deficiency-friendly menu for VR. Our team used the davidmathlogic.com tools and Paul Tol’s Notes to build a palette for the menu, and the OpenDyslexia typeface to improve the accessibility of the menu.

Initial menu draft created by teammate John Craig.

The first revision by Scout, including new colors, and the game’s logo. We decided to go with a semi-transparent menu for VR.

Second revision - including the new OpenDyslexia font and a few new added options. The koi fish volume sliders were illustrated by Kevin Ang and are also featured in gameplay.

Final menu as seen in the game. As the experience was used for Ph.D. research, we included a few options that allow users to revisit a specific story/part of the experience.
